The Sun and the Signs of the Zodiac

For many modern people, the word “sign” calls to mind the signs of the zodiac. In fact, people have defended their devotion to following the signs of the zodiac by taking me to Genesis 1:14. “And God said, "Let there be lights [sun & moon] in the firmament of the heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years…”
“See,” they say, “signs are in the Bible.”  Case closed, right? Not so fast.

Others, who understand God’s absolute resistance to anything of the occult, any superstitious attempt to follow the sun, stars, or planets for direction in life, would know that such an interpretation of “signs” would be completely inappropriate and anti-God.

So, if the sun is not a sign of the zodiac, what is it a sign of? Signs point to something. What or who is the sun pointing to? The answer is not hard to find.

We discover that the author pays special attention to the same word “sign(לְאֹתֹת֙ ) in Deuteronomy 29:3. “Your eyes have seen the great judgments, those signs and mighty wonders.” Moses is telling the Israelites that the judgments that God brought upon Egypt, the destructive plagues, were “signs.” The plagues were signs that Israel’s God was more powerful than the Egyptian gods. The plagues revealed the impotence of the Egyptian gods to resist when challenged by Israel’s God. The plagues, signs of God’s mighty overruling power, made that case airtight.

So, what is God’s purpose for the sun and moon? The sun and moon not only provide light for the day and for the night, the sun and moon point to God; the sun and moon serve as signs, daily, visual reminders to us of the overruling power and majesty of God. The sun and the moon help us identify the divine nature of God, His unsurpassed power, His glory & greatness, His love for you—giving light and warmth—and His faithfulness. When was the last time the sun failed to rise in the east?

So, we have no need to follow the sun or stars as signs of the zodiac. We need to look at the One to whom the sun and stars point, the loving and glorious God and Father of the Lord Jesus Christ. Why not follow this loving God today!

The Psalmist agrees: “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the skies proclaim the work of His hands.” Psalm 19:1. The sun points to the Son and His Father.
